Lemony Snicket (August 15, 2021)

The Lemony Snicket is an unusual-looking cocktail in a crooked martini glass, with an oversized lemon garnish with prominent seeds.

We’ve been enjoying our limoncello recently, as well as the show Hacks. (And Jean Smart is from Seattle – we didn’t know that!)

This drink, though not necessarily inspired by Hacks, was a companion as we watched an episode. And this line stuck out at us, and we don’t even know why:

F*** you, Lemony Snicket!”

Ava from Hacks

It doesn’t even make sense, and maybe that’s why it’s so funny. And for the record, we watched the whole Series of Unfortunate Events with Neil Patrick Harris and loved it.

Anyway, the drink is delightful. Hacks is complicated and seriously funny.

It’s a cousin, maybe, to this earlier cocktail. There are no new ingredients. The proportions are changed, and there’s no lemonade this time (because we used it all up).

This is sweeter than the earlier drink. Elizabeth said she could really taste the limoncello, which is funny because there’s less in this one. It’s lemony, but not puckering, more like a sweet lemon. Delicious!

I thought this crooked glass, and oddball slice of lemon – huge, with prominent seeds – were perfect for this drink.

Is it weird that we base so many cocktails on our pandemic TV-watching habits?

  • Exhibit A: Take It Sleazy…
  • Exhibit B: The Belgian Detective and many other Poirot-inspired cocktails…
  • Exhibit C: Last Dance…

Ingredients

  • 3 parts Gin

  • 2 parts Limoncello

  • 2 parts Simple Syrup

  • 2 parts Lemon Juice (with more added at the end)

Directions

  • Simple Syrup
  • Boil 1/2 c. water with 1/4 c. sugar and 1/4 c. (or even less) monk fruit. When crystals are dissolved, remove from heat and cool. Don’t use more monk fruit than sugar, or you’ll have a crystal problem on your hands right away.
  • Shake liquids together over ice, pour, garnish and enjoy!
