The Wittier Comeback

A Wittier Comeback cocktail, which features an olive and a cherry as garnish.

We served The Wittier Comeback just a few days after making our original Witty Comeback. Sometimes we get on a kick and experiment with variables to try to get the best version of the cocktail … plus, there’s all that similar liquor hanging around, don’t forget!

There are only two real differences in this wittier version:

  • We changed glasses, from a coupe to a martini.
  • We enhanced the garnish to include a cherry *and* an olive. It was a pretty neat trick to add that tiny bit of salt from the olive to the overall flavor.

Overall, I think this is most definitely a Wittier comeback! We considered it a win!

  • 4 oz. Whiskey (it was supposed to be Rye, but Rules are Rules!)

  • 1 oz. Amaro

  • 1 oz. Lemon Juice (about 1 lemon)

  • Ginger Simple Syrup
  • 1/4 c. peeled and chopped Ginger

  • 3/4 c. water

  • 3/4 c. sugar

  • Garnish
  • Cherry

  • Olive

  • If you can, make the Ginger Simple Syrup ahead, so that it has time to cool: boil together the ginger, water and sugar. Strain the ginger chunks from the mixture, and chill in the fridge.
  • Shake the liquors, lemon juice, and syrup together in a cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Garnish with these delightful bits of sugar *and* salt (it’s the salt that makes it a *wittier* comeback) and enjoy!
