Elven Hot Chocolate

A super-rich and chocolatey hot chocolate in a Hufflepuff mug sits on the counter by a list.

On Christmas Eve, Max and I were up a little late, and the mood for hot chocolate took hold. I promised to make him a special one. Not only was it rich with chocolate, but I put a couple of surprises in the bottom.

Does anyone else remember the Cone Head Sundae at the Friendly’s? They used to put a surprise pile of candy at the bottom, so when you got to the end of the actual sundae, it was like a treat-within-a-treat. That was my inspiration here.

Max loves peppermint, which is so great at any time of year (not just now, at the holidays). I made the hot chocolate with Peppermint Extract on the stove and also stashed two peppermint candies in the mug before I poured the drink. I also put a Hershey’s Kiss at the bottom. I figured that they would all either melt and enhance the flavor, or he’d find a Cone Head-style treat at the bottom of the drink.

You may be thinking that the list in the photo is either a list for Santa, or a note to him. While we did write him a letter before going to bed, it’s actually a numbered ranking of all the Hercule Poirot movies we’ve watched recently – a shared passion in the house these days. I’m sure there will be some homicide-inspired cocktail names coming up!

  • 8 oz. Milk

  • 4 Tbsp. Cocoa Powder (or to taste)

  • 2 tsp. Peppermint Extract

  • 2 Peppermint Candies

  • 1 Hershey’s Kiss

  • Lightly heat milk, cocoa, and peppermint extract on the stove, and remove before it reaches a boil.
  • Hide the candy in the bottom of the mug, and pour the hot chocolate over it.
  • Toast your favorite Hufflepuff!
Enjoyed on December 24
